The capital of the Czech Republic, Prague’s charming old town escaped the devastations of World War II and its medieval center still charms visitors with its cobblestone streets, courtyards, and churches. You can wander without a purpose and be entranced by the glints and shadows the sun casts on gold towers and domes, but enhance your visit by making sure to take in these sights.

Old Town – Stare Mesto

The central location for tourist wanderings, Old Town (Stare Mesto) used to be surrounded by a moat and wall. Today Old Town welcomes all visitors to roam the narrow, atmospheric streets. One of the most popular spots in Old Town is Old Town Square (staromestske namesti). Its charm comes from its mixed architecture, including both gothic and baroque churches, and the astronomical clock, the oldest one of its kind still working.

Art & Science in Prague

A series of 20 paintings, The Slav Epic is almost a picture book of Slavic myths and history. The paintings were the masterwork of the Czech artist Alfons Mucha. Currently the works are displayed at the National Gallery. Before there was science, there was alchemy. Speculum Alchemiae, the Museum of Alchemy, takes visitors inside an alchemist’s laboratory where they concocted elixirs to give the drinker eternal youth or labored to turn base metals into gold.

Fine Dining in Prague

For an elegant meal in Prague, celebrities and other visitors head to Kampa Park. The restaurant’s views of the waterfront and Charles Bridge are especially pleasant from the terraces during summer. Another summer destination to keep in mind is Hvar, Croatia for an enjoyable summer trip by the sea.

Wallenstein Palace Gardens

Wallenstein Palace Gardens continues the palace’s 17th-century Baroque style in the design of the garden, featuring statues and fountains. Occasional concerts make far more pleasant sounds than the cries of the peacocks that roam the grounds. Continue your enchanting travels in Europe with a stop in Zurich, Switzerland.

Charles Bridge – Karluv Most

One of the most famous bridges crossing the river to Prague, Charles Bridge (Karluv Most) is lined with 30 baroque statues. The bridge is one of the most colorful approaches into the city. Nighttime visits to the bridge are popular for its view of the illuminated city.

Petrin Tower – Rozhledna

Take in the view of Prague from Petrin Tower (Rozhledna). At 60m high, the tower wouldn’t be that tall except that it’s on top of Petrin Hill, adding 318m. The view from the top takes in the entire city and on some days even Snezka peak, 150km away, is visible.

Opera & Cultural Performances in Prague

The Prague State Opera performs in a neo-Rococo theater, one of the most beautiful in Europe. Opera is one of the arts performed at the Prague National Theater, which also has plays, ballet and dramatic performances. The Neo-Renaissance building is nicknamed the Golden Chapel.
